Owner Tipping

We rode to/from the airport and were driven the owner of the limo company, we didn't tip because he was the owner. Should we have tipped?

We also have been to restaurants where the owner waited on us so we didn't tip.

That's what my father taught me when I was young- don't tip the owner.

I don't feel that applies to owner/operator cab drivers, but it may with limo drivers.

Maybe the logic is poor, but I tip for extraordinary service regardless of the status of the provider.

Where is the OP?

I wouldn't tip anyway in most of the countries I go to.

I was also taught that it isn't necessary to tip the owner - a Midwest belief, perhaps?

Since I am not always able to discern ownership, I have put this teaching on the shelf.

The logic is that the owner doesn't need tips to put him over the minimum wage. He gets a 100% of the profits already.

I always tip regardless who drives. Some get better tips then others but being the owner doesn't make a difference.

I've always found the logic to not tip the owner to be a bit odd.

Say a go to hair dressers where the owner works as well as some employees but there is a set price for a hair cut, no matter who is doing it. Should I really pay less in total because the owner happens to cut my hair rather than one of the others - especially as the owner is probably more experienced and thus better.

The owner is already making money off the other hair stylists by getting a cut out of each haircut. You are not paying less for your haircut you are just not adding anything extra.

I've always wondered if it was awkward to tip the owner as well.

But then I just think, they're doing the work...owner or not, they should be tipped?

Another tipping question

Sorry in advance to FTers who are irritated that my post is not directly related to the original question....

How about tipping airport shuttle drivers (for paid trips to the city). Recently, someone said that I should tip them just $1-2 if I only have a carry on bag, not 10-15%.

I assume you are referring to services like Super Shuttle. On these I tip a percentage basis that can vary widely based on the driver. I once had a driver who was excedingly polite and obviously took great pride in his van to the point of having magazines available for his customers to read; he got a very good tip, about 20%+ and in cash, not on my credit card. I have had drivers so rude that I would give them 10% on my credit card and try no to give a cent over that amount.

Limo companies

If you're talking about an actual limo company (vs. Super Shuttle type airport companies.) the limo companies typically already add in the 10-15% tip.
