Having read the thread about the woman and her 19 hours "ordeal", I am now wondering whether I made a mistake by chosing to connect from LAX to FRA via Chicago in early January. The connection time is 3 hours and 15 minutes. The other option was to go through IAD. Shall I change or just go through ORD?

I think you will be fine so long as there is no freak weather. You can get stuck or delayed in IAD just as much as you can get delayed at ORD.

I connect through ORD ~20 times a year, summer, fall, winter and spring.
Never had any major problems. Occasional little hiccups but nothing that changed my travel plans in a major way.
