Physical problems during prolonged flying

Ok, this might be the oddest post I have ever written. On my recent mile run I noticed that I get a physical condition from extended flying. It happened both weekend. After long flying situations (15+ hours) I get very constipated. Am I the only one?

Yes, it IS an odd post...

Oh I totally understand the water issue. I usually drink 1-2 liters or more on any flight over 5 hours yet it doesnt help.

It happens to me too, but on any flight 3+ hours. Without going into too many details, I'm a very regular person, and diet alone has never made me constipated. 3+ hours on a plane and I am constipated and have horrible stomach cramps.

It has much more to do with your eating and sleeping schedule. Stay on that, no matter where you are.

Happens to me, but it never bothers me.

Happens also to an FA friend of mine, even on short flights (eg regional flights of 2 or 3 hours) if she ends the day somewhere else. She thinks its something to do with getting used to "alien toilets".

Try Benefibre. Not the capsuls but the powder type. This is not a laxative so don't worry about that. Just take it for the few days you are traveling. Make sure to drink water befor, during and after the flight.

Last month I spent approx 125 hours (about 5 days total) in the air over the course of a week while on a mileage run.

Didn't really have the problem to which you speak this time around, though flying can definitely cause it. Worse for me was a sore upper back for a week after I got home.

I would supplement the airline diet with lots of fiber as others suggested.

I understand. I flew 26,000 miles this weekend and arrived home a little backed up, if you now what I mean. This MR really wrecked havoc on my plumbing. At first I had the exact opposite problem that you describe Once that issue cleared up I developed your problem. I think it was lack of sleep, lots of different food served at times I would not normally be eating (all flights were in F/J). After four days of flying I feel like my body has been whacked about with a baseball bat. Unfortunately, I suspect that is more related to age then it is to flying.

I toss a couple of lemons or limes into my carryon and drink the juice squeezed into a small glass of water in the morning. Yes, you can cut the fruit open with a plastic serrated knife. I also carry a baggie of flax seeds, whole or ground, to sprinkle into cereal or yoghurt.
