Where does the term "gatehouse" come from?

I don't know if I've heard the term anywhere but DL. It is used to refer to (I think) the area surrounding the gate; the podium, the seats and carpet. It seems like an anachronism - maybe there was once a shack out on the tarmac that sheltered the agent(s) from the elements. Anyone know?
