Gosh, I wish I could recall... was back in the early 50's on Pan Am. I wasn't much more than a toddler at the time. DC-3 Clipper! Found a pic of us in an in an old family album. Our family flew somewhere about once a year. All things considered, it's a whole lot less expensive to fly these days. even for a young family.

I started 'soloing' around 1960, back when I knew it all, was 8' tall and immortal. Of course, I've shrunk to substantially less than 8' and forgotten most of what I 'knew'. Still working on that immortality thing.

Oh yeah!

I was five years old - flying from South Bend to Boston via Chicago. My mother and I flew United and she still talks about dragging me in to the lady's room at O'Hare so she could use the bathroom.

That first flight changed everything for me. I had a blast - and couldn't get over it. I became an airline nut as a result - collecting everything and anything I could get my hands on. On special occassions, my parents would take me out to Bradley International in Hartford to watch the planes and even have dinner at the upstairs restaurant which was a sit-down affair. I would dash behind the ticket counters and grab old bag tags, ticket folders and anything else I get.

The airline folks thought it was funny..and would just give me plenty of the real deal...I had a drawer filled with old Allegheny, Piedmont, United, Northeast and other airline stuff.

I've been loyal to UA pretty much ever since. I'm P1 with about half a million miles in my MP account.

How about your first time in first? Best (most enjoyable) flight?

I flew ORD-EWR with UA for one college break, I was taking my cat with me. As I walked to my seat in the waaaay back, someone else in Y had apparently complained to the FA that they were allergic to cats (I assume she was referring to the cat and not me). The FA came to me and offered me a seat in first -- but only if I wanted it, I didn't have to move if I didn't want. Didn't take me long to decide. And now I take my cat with me whenever I can.

Most enjoyable was DEN-ORD also on UA, I used some 500-mi upgrades and was put on the upper deck of a 747, an exit row no less. That flight was too short...

I was 6 weeks old, so I can't remember.

It was something like CLE-ORD(?)-LAX-HND-SEL-HKG.

BTW, does anybody remember if Haneda was HND or TYO before Narita opened in around 1978?

A great memory; In the early 60s, I remember flying SFO-HNL (not my 1st flight) on a PanAm 707, descending the airstairs to see friends walking the tarmac to greet me with a lei. It was all so civilized then.
There was a fountain in the HNL terminal spouting pineapple juice, little paper cups stacked up. To this day, I remember the smell of Honolulu as flowers/pineapple juice, even tho the reality now is jet fuel on the trade winds.

My first flight, Peidmont Airlines BLF to ROA in the late 60's, early 70's. Lord those were the days. You could walk right up to the flight line and watch the planes.

My first trip in F....... MCO to CLT last year Mistake by our corporate travel office put all three of my party in F. I had seat 1A. Flying on cloud nine that day. I've tried to upgrade whenever I can since then. Especially for my Right coast to Left coast flights.

My first time joining the mile high club....... ^ ^ Let's just say we used to own a 172 Skyhawk and I have a good friend that flies a KingAir. 'Nuff said

Talking Helicopter

Commercial flight?
A helicopter from top of downtown Chicago rooftop to Meigs Field.
Maybe in late 50's? Thats about all I remember.

My first jet flight was a promotional deal where the depature and destination was the airport in Bay City, Michigan. About a 30 minute flight!

Remember Eastern's "buy a car, Get a Trip?" Did it, and looked for the furthest place we could fly on Eastern - turns out that was Cancun.

LHR-BFS on a BA Trident, 1983. I was 14, on my own, we descended in a thunderstorm and I filled the 'barf' bag.

My first flight was in 1965, MSP-TPA (with stops at ORD and ATL) on a brand-new Northwest 727-100. My mother and I went to visit my Aunt, Uncle and cousins in Tampa. I remember that lunch was served between ORD and ATL; we had filet mignon with mushroom caps and some kind of pudding for dessert. In Y!

I was 7 years old, and I remember during the stop at ORD descending the rear stairs on the 727 and standing on the tarmac talking to one of the stewardesses (that was what they were called then).

And of course, no security, no metal detector, no nothing back then. Just show up at the airport and board the flight!

I was probably around 12 years old (1976), and we were returning home from visiting my brother in Yuma, AZ. We had taken a Greyhound bus out there, so the flight was totally boring by comparison. On the bus, we had a crazy lady who locked herself in the bathroom for long periods of time and held long conversations with invisible people. She was finally kicked off the bus at a rest stop after she got into someone's luggage and started putting on their clothes during the rest break. Compared to that, flying was dull!

I remember my second flight much more vividly. I was 17 (1982), and we flew roundtrip to Nashville, TN, to a national competition. It was lots of fun because I was sitting next to a friend and we were supposed to have a teacher/chaperone in our row, but she switched seats with someone else to hit on another teacher. Not that we could be too wild on a plane, but I remember it as quite a fun experience...none of the fear that I have now. Both out and back were night landings, and I loved looking out at the colorful runway lights (still do, even after countless flights).

It was 1966 and I was three. I'd read about flying and my parents had explained it to me, but I didn't quite grasp the concept. I was convinced my mother and I would have to hold tightly to the wing of the jet. (Don't remember what it was, but probably Northwest, as we flew MSP-CLE). I remember sitting in the airport, and then sitting in another row of 3 seats in another part of the airport, and then asking my mother when we were going to fly the plane.

"We're already in Ohio," she said. I was furious--since we boarded by jetbridge, I never realized we were on the aircraft and she distracted me with a new book for takeoff.

Luckily I have never actually had to fly on the wing. As for my first time in first, that would've been either MCO-CMH or reverse, back when I was single and upgrades were cheap. And now first is pretty much a requirement.

My first flight was when I was 5. It was on CP to LAX via YVR. I think I remember my parents telling me the plane was a 767, but I remember we had bulkhead seats for at least two of us. Before taking off, my brother (2 at the time) swallowed quite a bit of gum that my mother gave him to relieve the pressure on his ears.
