Are flights really this booked?

Ive been thinking about taking a last min trip this holiday weekend, i havent had a particular destination in mind, but it seems like all flights everywhere out of nyc are really packed. I know its the 4th and all but i cant imagine that a ton of people are traveling to sfo at 11pm on a sat night like the seat maps show. Are the flights really this full, is it capacity cutbacks like i keep reading or are the airlines just displaying the flights full when they really are not?

There have been a lot of flight cancellations due to the storms that have wreaked havoc on the east coast. Displaced people are simply being put on whatever available flight(s) there are.

I'm looking to go to NYC on Fri for biz -- it's really packed. I may be forced to buy a paid F ticket.
