Surprise int'l stopovers and destinations

I was recently on the Emirates website and saw an ad for their new JFK>HAM service, which came as a pleasant surprise to me. Same goes for Air Tahiti Nui's service to CDG.

Of course, more hardcore business travelers are already aware of most of these stopover destinations, but I seem to discover them by chance while doing mindless web surfing.

As is the case with MH, it's *possible* to get a nice (angled) sleeper seat to Europe for $1800, which is dirt cheap in comparison to more convential/expected options!

Other connections (all originating from my home in NYC) that I'm aware of are to Vancouver (Cathay), Frankfurt (Singapore)...I think that's it. But I'm betting there are others out there.

Are there any other "secret" (I know they're not REALLY secret) routes that pop into your mind, that often provide a pricing advantage? These can originate outside the US too. I'm wondering which I'm missing!

This really doesn't have anything to do with Miles or points, so I'll move it over to TravelBuzz.

P.S. JAL has a JFK-GRU route.

Qantas: SFO<->YVR

Emirates, Kenya Air: HKG<->BKK

Neither of these is a particularly big secret if you search on airfare search sites.

SAA has nice, off-the-beaten path stopover options in the Cape Verde Islands or Senegal to or from the US

LOL. From reading the title, I thought this was about unscheduled landings "surprise stopover").

Same here. I flashed back to the old movie "White Nights" starring Gregory Hines and Mikhail Baryshnikov. An airliner makes an emergency landing in the USSR, causing great problems for the ballet dancing defector on board.

There's about fifteen minutes of great dancing if you don't mind sitting through two hours of really stupid movie.

Sorry for the misplacement of the thread. Anyway I'm looking forward to keeping a list and keeping these in Filemaker somewhere.

Wow! That's a bizarre one that I never would have guessed. And I've seen backpackers on other boards complaining about "no connections from South America > Africa" besides Varig...

Emirates, MEL-AKL.

I believe Emirates has a couple of other trans-Tasmans...

JAL, YVR-MEX, BNE-SYD

Edited: YVR-MEX may be limited, like a Fri/Mon schedule.

Indian Airlines - BKK - KUL
Lufthansa - BKK - KUL

And i believe KLM & Emirates also fly a destination from BKK. Can't think of where right now.

IB - SJO-PTY and then used to offer loads of C America connection from MIA (might still)
BA - SIN/BKK-SYD, BAH-DOH, AUH-MCT plus a few odd connections in the Carribbean and in Africa (not all of which are for sale)
LH - BAK-ASG
QF - SIN-FRA/LHR, BKK-LHR
AI - ORD-LHR/FRA, JFK-LHR
KU - JFK-LHR (this may have stopped)
PK - MAN-JFK (I think)
TG - SYD-AKL
NZ - PPT/NAN/APW/TBU/RAR-LAX

I am sure there are plenty more.
