Broad airport codes?

When I do my searches for good fares and mileage runs, I find it extremely helpful to use codes like NYC, CHI, WAS and LON to encompass all major airports in a metropolitan area.

Are there such codes for other markets than those 4? The most helpful for me to know would be the San Francisco Bay Area, encompassing SFO/OAK/SJC; South Florida (MIA/FLL/PBI); and maybe SoCal (LAX/BUR/ONT/LGB).

Thanks!

Heraklion could be said to apply to a broad...

And there's plenty of them around NWI.

Anyway... Not all reservations systems have metro area codes for the areas you're looking for. Those that do use QSF, MFW and QLA respectively.

Some res systems will let you put a "." after the airport code to get all area airports (e.g., "SFO.") - but I don't know if it works on the web-based overlay systems.

In theory, QLA will work for Los Angeles and QSF will work for the Bay Area. They work on Expedia, but not on Travelocity or Orbitz.

You're interested in city codes, which are different from airport codes. Some common city codes are:

NYC
WAS
YTO (Toronto)
TYO (Tokyo)
LON
PAR (Paris)
MKC (Kansas City)
DTT (Detroit)
ORL (Orlando)
CHI (Chicago)

Metropolitan Area Codes

You want QSF. Here's the list:

I never understood why Northwest often used DTT on tickets (not sure if Delta still does). It consists of Detroit Metro (DTW), Detroit City (DET) and Willow Run (Ypsilanti - YIP). DTW is the only one with commercial service for many many years.

I find matrix.itasoftware.com better for searching as you can input multiple unique airport codes.

Someone should definitely set one up for the L.A. metro area, considering we have five airports with scheduled commercial service and flights out of SNA/ONT are often (but not always) cheaper...

Perhaps, but it's not widely recognized like NYC, CHI, etc. For example, tried booking a flight from QLA on aa.com and it thought I was talking about Auckland

HOU is both HOU and IAH.

That's very strange, and, as far as I've seen, it's not any any of the lists of these codes (like this list).

Want "proof"?
- Try a ticket from IAH to XXX. The fare is going to be HOU -> XXX.
- Search for HOU to XXX. IAH -> XXX flights will show up.

Contrast this with DAL. DAL does not include DFW.

Edit: This can actually be annoying if one wants to look for flights out of HOU (Hobby) and not HOU (Houston Metro).

From Expedia:
Houston, TX (HOU) – This includes Houston (EFD-Ellington Fld.); Houston (HOU-Hobby); Houston (IAH-Bush Intercontinental); and Houston (SGR-Sugar Land Munc.)
