TA Upgrades
The post on obtaining upgrades the other day made me wonder...was the advice about TAs sometimes being able to get them correct? I am skeptical because the post claimed you can become a travel agent for $50 and you don't have to actually sell travel. That loophole has been all but closed; vendors these days want a real ID like a CLIA, IATA, etc. I own a thriving internet agency that specializes in Disney cruises, and I have an ID. Since we used to fly ATA (no first class) and now WN, I've never really thought about it. But we're going to be flying to Barcelona next year, and because it is part of a 14 day cruise, we can't afford to splurge on the airfare. Would it do me any good to politely mention that I am a TA and show a legitimate card? I do remember hearing someone try it on United many years back, but she was really snippy and said, "I am a travel agent AND I have a handicapped child, so you should upgrade me"...real entitlement attitude, and the GA didn't buy it. But if a polite, low-key approach might work, I'm willing to try (only because it's such a long stinkin' flight...I'm used to 2-2 hours max).
