this is like going from queens to brookline. either at the airport (train station at the airport) , or at the central train station, but a ticket for colonge. some of the trains are fast, but the sbahn service for the cities overlap. half an hour, less than 10 euro. really, don't sweat it.

It is about a half hour train ride, with trains departing about every half hour. You can just go to the ticket counter at the Duesseldorf train station, and they help you get the correct ticket.

It is quite easy to travel from Dsseldorf Airport to Cologne by train.
Dsseldorf International has two train stations. There is a commuter train station (S-Bahn) right at the terminal. The long distance trains depart from the long distance station, which can be reached from the terminal by the so called skytrain (take the escalators up) or by shuttle buses if the skytrain is not working 8due to maintenance).
There is a ticket office of Deutsche Bahn. You could look after trains at the homepage of Deutsche Bahn by clicking on internat. Guest right at the top
Note, this is not Dsseldorf Main Station. If you like to travel to Dsseldorf Main Station before heading to Cologne, take the Commuter train to Main Station, ticket boxes are at the entrance to the platform. Between Dsseldorf and Cologne is a frequent schedule of trains (from regional train with several stops to High Speed by ICE).Anyway, travel time is app. 20 minutes by train (ICE, IC, EC) or some 30 minutes by regional train.

You'll enjoy both cities. Kln has a beautiful cathedral downtown. Dusseldorf has a very nice "walking zone", and is also one of Europe's fashion capitals. Lots of nice looking women walking around, and they dress very nicely ^
