Open returns bookable online?

Long time listener, first time caller ^

It looks like I'll be moving to Indonesia for the forseeable future to become an English teacher. I'm interested in getting there as cheaply as possible, but because I don't have things like a work schedule yet, I'm trying to book an open return. What booking classes should I look for in order to find this? Can I tweak an ITA search so it only produces fare basis codes with this option?

Thanks!

mdonley

[Moderators: if we have an Indonesia branch, perhaps this should end up there?]

"Cheap" and "open ticket" don't go together in the same sentence.

Yeah, I had a feeling that cheap and open return might be mutually exclusive.

I'll probably just end up getting a cheap(er) one-way and getting a cheap flight to Singapore or something for visa purposes. Oh well, thanks anyway.

Terms "cheap" & "one-way" are mutually-exclusive as well. For example, at the moment, the cheapest roundtrip fare for LAX-JKT-LAX is around $700 USD, while a one-way LAX-JKT fare is approx. $550.

You might check out the more restrictive fares. If you know approximately when you will return, set the return date and take a fare that has a minimal change fee. The fare plus the change penalty may still be cheaper than 2 one ways or an open ticket.
