I prefer learning in a group so hopefully I can meet others I can practice with. The New School and Geothe Institute/DH run $500 for 10 weeks and Berlitz was something like $1450 for 20 weeks (ouch!). Since I'm paying out of my own pocket I need it to be reasonably priced to see if I can get the hang of it.

I'd consider seeking out German-American friendship clubs and/or high school German teachers and college professors. They could probably point you in a few lower-cost directions.

A couple of links for you...

German Learning Opportunities Website

The German-American Community Project, Inc. founded / supported by the German-American community of New York, the German Consulate General, the Goethe Institute, major German cultural institutions and a growing number of corporations, groups and people.

Viel Glck!

I am also looking to learn German in NYC, my job has requested that I gain some basic knowledge and will pay for the course. Any new recommendations or comments?

Geothe Institute or Berlitz.

Private / Immersion = amazing, but higher cost

So just go with group classes, at either or both.

Geothe Institute v. Berlitz. Either one better for individual lessons? Group?

Deutsches Haus at NYU has terrific courses in conversational and reading courses auf Deutsch. As an adult, I had my choice of Tuesday evening or Saturday morning classes and the fee was very reasonable (~$250) for 10 weeks. The course materials weren't that expensive either and were used for the first three levels.
