Is Paris Burning?

Anyone have any FIRST HAND info on what's going on? Is it OK to visit central Paris? Or is this media hype?

I think this thread is more appropriate in TravelBuzz so I'm moving it there.

As I write this from Paris, I would say the hype is far worse than the situation. Unless you plan on taking outings to the ghettos during the dead of night, safety is not a significant concern. Some security measures have tightened slightly so you may experience an occasional inconvenience and I suppose there is some risk that you might end up at precisely the wrong place at the exact wrong time - though I would suggest that risk exists everywhere all the time in our modern world, but visiting Paris is not full of danger as TV might have you believe.

Are we surprised that the news media are taking specific localized incidents and giving the impression that they're widespread and a "pandemic" (their newest favorite word-of-the-month)?

I've been in two other places when there was some civil unrest and it was always reported much more severe than the reality. As usual, be alert and be smart.

The only fire I've noticed is in the fireplace, it didn't spread either so there is no need to worry.
