Question a/c being minimized to save $ ?

I have a question for FT people who might know about a/c on planes, are the airlines trying to minimize a/c right now to save money? We were held on a runway for 2 hours because of weather (...couldn't we go into the terminal somehow?????) and it was a living hell because of no a/c. Finally the pilot took pity on us and let us out of the plane, even tho he said it wd probably get him in trouble. FT experts?

As far as I'm aware, sitting on the runway for two hours with the air conditioning on uses enormous amounts of fuel. Even in flight the air is recycled to a minimum to preserve fuel consumption.
