Loud & Obnoxious on his cell

Was in the NW Club in Concourse B at DTW on Friday, July 1 enjoying a relaxing time on my laptop getting my trip reports done so I didn't have to complete them on the weekend.

Sitting approximately 15 feet away was a young man (mid 30's, now that I'm 41) also working on his laptop. Let me give you a taste of his conversation.

blah, blah, blah.......oh she's a b!tch
blah, blah, blah......she's a b!tch, blah, blah, blah.......oh she's such a b!tch

blah, blah, blah.....oh he's a redneck, blah, blah, blah.....he's a redneck,
blah, blah, blah......she's a b!tch, blah, blah, blah.......oh he's such a redneck.

WHEN WILL PEOPLE REALIZE THAT WE DO NOT NEED TO HEAR YOUR CONVERSATION ON YOUR CELL PHONE!! AND IF YOU'RE GOING TO MAKE A COMPLETE JACKA$$ OUT OF YOURSELF DO IT IN PRIVATE.

rant over......

I approached the agent in the NW Club and asked her to speak to him about his phone etiquette. I will also say that there were 2 kids much closer to him that overheard his "remarks about the redneck and b!tch".

THIS is exactly why i don't think cellphone use should be allowed in flight.

that said, i more than once have stared at of these obnoxious guys, waited until his eye caught mine, and--with a pleasant expression--used my hand (palm down, moving from high to low) to signal that he should turn the volume down. it generally works, although it helps if you've exchanged looks with your fellow travelers nearby beforehand. when mr. obnoxious looks around, he sees others are backing you up

a variation...

I like the hand gesture, although I usually use one that might be considered somewhat more inflammatory.

Holding hand about the same height as mouth, approx 12 inches away from head with palm facing the loud talker, fingers pointing up and thumb pointing towards loud talker. Bring fingers down and thumb up to meet to simulate a mouth talking, open hand, close hand again. Sort of like you would play with a sock puppet on your hand.
Do this until they notice it and then continue to do this until they lower their voice, look away or end their conversation.

I have found that having a poker face while doing this works best. Don't show any anger or frustration, if anything maybe a slight eyebrow raise as if in expectation of their call ending.

By the way if any one has ever been driving in the DTW area (highway), in the left lane doing 55mph*, talking on your cell and been passed, on the right, by someone doing the above... that was probably me.

*Highway speed limit in Michigan is normally 70mph.

I'll keep an eye out for that next time.
