Upgrading to Reserved Seats?

In recent years, I have had good luck off and on upgrading those seats often held till the last minute (such as the first row after first class)

I have had success printing my online tickets 24-30 hrs before take off when that option is still available. Sometimes there is an option to change seats and these seats show as open.

Other times, the strategy seems to be to show up to the airport really early, like 2 to 2.5 hours beforehand and change them at the check in kiosk.

Other times nothing works.

Is there a consensus on the best timing for this. Is this airline specific, should I be posting this on the Northwest World Perks forum? (my airline of choice)

Thanks!!!
