How do code shares work?
And I don't mean the obvious answer of "not very well". I mean, economically, for the airlines, what's the point?
Why is it somehow easier / better / whatever for me to book a USAir flight with a United flight number attached to it than it is to simply book the USAir flight number?

There are at least 2 kinds of codeshare. One is called "hard codeshare" don't know the name for the other.
In the past CO had a hard codeshare with VS on IAD-LHR. CO owned the seats in the VS plane. In fall and winter, the price for VS Upper class was $6k+, from CO, the price of BF was $1152. The differences were, with the CO fare, one had to sit in the front section(which CO owned/leased) of the plane, and one did not get limo service to the airport.
This is now gone.
For most ofthe past winter, the cost of a UA flight IAD-Europe was about $6k in biz. If you purchased the same ticket from US as a codeshare, the price was under $1500.
Codeshares do make it much easier to book from USA to non-hubs in Europe(my only experience). IAD-BLQ, LYS, VCE, FLR, CAI, and on and on, that second plane can be from most anybody, and by having a codeshare arrangement, the price is much better than with a non codeshare. AF codeshares with AZ to italy, for example from CDG.
