What does this quote mean to you?

Since we have such a well travelled group, do you have an experience you would like to share to help all of us better understand this quote?

When you travel, remember that a foreign country is not designed to make you comfortable. It is designed to make its own people comfortable.
Clifton Paul Fadiman

PS - I would have posted this in OMNI if I had access (hint, hint, hint - to anyone who has "pull" with the moderators )

Unfortunately moderators do not have power to grant that wish. It is software driven (a matrix of time on the board or number of posts - I think the magic number is 180 days/posts).

Why ON EARTH would you want to put this in OMNI? OMNI is for all the NON-miles, points, and travel-related stuff.

Since it's travel-related, it's right where it belongs -- in TravelBuzz. @:-)

It means Bill Bryson to me

If anyone is not familiar , he's a humorous travel writer who wrote , among other things , "I'm A Stranger Here Myself" about his experiences of moving back to his home country, the USA, after 20 years in Britain.

It also means EuroDisney to me. I grew up in LA and spent a lot of BDays at Dizzyland. When I went to France, I never really appreciated the differences between the cultures as much as when I saw what they did with something so very "American". (I actually saw employees not !Smiling! , unheard of stateside)

I'm guessing that the well-read Fadiman was paraphrasing Bowles.
