How long is your passport valid for?
I'm wondering how long are adult passports from around the world vaild for. And whether Canada is the only country that issues 5 years passports.
Canada - 5 years
US - 10 years

My mother's Indian passport is valid 20 years from issue.
She has been lucky not to get in trouble because of it, but the Indian Embassy in Washington has recorded at least 11 cases (most notably the high profile case of Rayan Babu Yellina who spent 28 days in an El Paso detention center) of Indian citizens being detained by US DHS officials simply because passports of 20 year validity are considered "suspicious".

Greek- 5 years (with a reduced fee option for 1 year passport)
Mind you, passports in the EU are fast losing their relevance. They are not needed for intra-Schengen travel and national ID cards are considered valid documents for extra-Schengen (but intra-EU/EEA) travel. Therefore Europeans only need a passport if travelling outside the 30 or so countries regulated by the above arrangements.

You used to be able (when the EU was the EEC, and Schengen just an obscure town) to get a British Visitors' Passport at the Post Office, on presenting ID (not even photo ID). It required no proof of nationality, and was valid for travel to selected European countries for 1 year.
Doesn't exist any more.
Now, in the EU, you can travel to most other EU countries on an accepted form of national ID. This, of course, is only useful if you country has any form of national ID. Mine certainly doesn't...

This may be off topic, but how much did you passport cost? New US passports are now $100 - and by Dec 2007, youll need one for every border crossing in the US.

Read in the news somewhere that Singapore is reducing passport validity to 5 years so that new technology (biometrics) can be rolled out faster. Also Singapore is one of the few countries which would be meeting the US VWP deadline for biometric passports.
Cost is S$50, about US$30.
