9-11 Diversions

Just watched a program on cable about all the trans-Atlantic flights that were diverted to eastern Canada on 9-11 when US airspace was closed. There were several Delta flights that went to Gander and St. John’s Newfoundland. Close to 30,000 (yes 30,000!) passengers had to be put up and fed in schools and churches for 3 days until US airspace reopened.

One picture showed about 40 widebodies lined up, wingtip to wingtip on a runway at Halifax.

Any FT’ers on any of these diversions? Any stories?

They had several news programs on noncable stations about this at the time. I believe that there is an old thread about this on FT. You might want to do a search.

Welcome to FT!

Here's a link to a photo on the YHZ Halifax Airport site. Halifax got a few US Airways diversions. Moncton, New Brunswick YQM also had several flights

And a link to the Gander Airport site

ATL10A, although your post mentions several DL flights, it really covers a much broader spectrum. This event affected every flight in the air on that terrible day which resulted in such a large number of people being diverted to Canada. Therefore in the interest of having a far larger response to your inquiry, I am moving this thread to TravelBuzz.
