Question Cancelled flight options?

What are an airlines "requirements" if your flight is cancelled for mechanical reasons? I was recently cancelled on US Airways out of Philadelphia, they told me that they could only resechedule me on a "partner" airline, such as United, which had no flights. I asked about Southwest and was told that I was on my own if I wanted to go with them. Consequently I had to wait six hours for US Airways next flight.

I alsways thought all airlines had an agreement with each other?

Groups of airlines have agreements with one another.

If your flight is cancelled you can almost always get a pro-rated refund of the rest of the trip.

The airline should let you select an alternate flight of your choice without restrictions because all the "cheap seats" were booked.

If your flight is cancelled or delayed more than two hours, and you're flying on one of the "legacy" carriers (US Airways, United, American, Delta, Continental, or Northwest) you have the right to be placed on another airline if the airline you're flying can't get you there within two hours of your original arrival time. This is known as "rule 240."

However, low-cost airlines such as Southwest and JetBlue do not have ticketing agreements with the legacy carriers, so a reroute on Southwest from US Airways is not possible unless you buy a new ticket.

Generally when traveling I always have a book that gives me alternate timetables. This way I can tell the agent the alternative flight I want to be placed on.

As for Jetblue while a great airline I found out the hard way they have no affliation with other airlines.
