The Seattle press this morning, in covering the sale to the Chinese carriers, says that Boeing will be re-naming the ship the 787 since 8 is regarded in China as a lucky number.

737 Classic/737NG isn't really a CCQ example. They're different models of the same type. The analogy would be to a 737/747 CCQ. If Boeing organises CCQ across 777/787, that would be a start, but to compete properly with Airbus on this issue they will also have to ensure that the 737 replacement has CCQ built into it from the beginning.

Absolutely agreed on both counts - and Airbus agrees too.

But there are a lot of sceptics around who think that there is no market for the A380 and cannot see why any airline would ever want to operate one when the Boeing model is the only way forward. That's a fallacy, as we've discussed. But the big question for Airbus is whether the rather specialist market at which the A380 is aimed will be big enough for the aircraft to be a commercial success.

I don't have anything to add, but I'd just like to thank those involved for about the first ever well-argued, rational Airbus/Boeing comparison I've ever seen on t'internet.

I was in Beijing when this sale was announced. The local press (CCTV9) gave it a very positive spin so as to make it sound like the Chinese airlines only did business with Boeing.

I found it interesting that on the way to and from PEK there was a billboard for the Airbus 380.... just a graphic of the plane, the name (in english), and some Chinese text. I can't read or speak Mandarin, so I'm not sure what it said. The driver of the car couldn't speak English so he couldn't translate.

The Chinese are downplaying the airbus 380 deal because the french had to lobby the EU to drop its arms embargo. Why you say? Because China won't buy the 380 unless the embargo was dropped. Also, China wants this deal with Boeing to help with the people who complain about the US-China trade imbalance, which currently is too much in China's favor.

Airbus has been in lengthy negotiations with the Chinese government. An announcement of the government order was expected last year during a state visit by Jacques Chirac, the French president, but is understood to have been held up by negotiations over the European Unions embargo on arms sales to China. Jack Straw, foreign secretary, said last week that he expected the arms embargo to be lifted within six months.
