Get an aisle seat and try to stand and stretch (or walk to bathroom) often.

Talking

1. Don't look at your watch - get onboard and settle in - get comfortable
2. Ambien is good but only if you hve 6-8 hours - it knocks me out for 5-6 but everyone is different.
3. I agree with the previous posted - once you mentally prepare it isn't that bed - I am more restless on shorter flights because they are often too short to watch a whole movie or sleep with medication.

Have a good trip

Get a good book! I found reading helps on long flights.

If there's a leisure aspect to your trip, get a guidebook of your destination city and plan your weekends on the plane.

If you want to sleep, Ambien is definitely the way to go. It won't leave you with a drugged feeling as benzodiazapine tranquilizers often do (e.g. valium, klonopin, attivan, etc.). Your doctor will almost surely write you a prescription for it, probably even over the phone. I carry a bottle with me in my laptop bag everywhere I go.

I would recommend trying it out a few times before leaving to figure out the right dose. Take it 30 min before you want to fall asleep. Don't take it if you don't intend to sleep as this can result in unusual experiences.
