These have actually been some pretty reliable places for me. They have very quiet rooms and you'll know why, if you ever happen to catch one under construction. All of the interior walls in between the rooms are made of concrete block. They always had clean pool areas and well-kept common areas. Rooms are unspectacular, but it's a LOT better than a Motel 6. I would put it on par with something on the order of an HI Express.
Thanks, Standby! That's great advice. These AmericInns are all over some of the areas to which I frequently travel, and I just haven't been brave enough to try one out yet. I'll try one out next time! Another great benefit of FT...

The hotel doesn't matter to me as much as its location. In Europe, the ability to get out at night, explore and try different restaurants is more important to me than the quality of the hotel. As long as its clean, has a good shower, good breakfast included (free WiFi helps too) then I'm happy. When staying places where there might be security concerns (Nairobi or Luanda would spring to mind here) then a five star hotel is essential.

I definitely agree with this! (In North America, Europe, or anywere for that matter...) In Europe, I'd much rather stay in a 3* boutique in exactly the neighborhood I want to hang out in than stay in a large business hotel in an area that doesn't interest me.
