st. maarten

ok, last week i saw a fare from dulles (iad) to st. maarten (sxm) on usair (using orbitz) for about $435. the next day it was gone. i can't seem to find anything better than $835 now. any thoughts on how to find something better? it's for 12/15 or 16 through 12/19. my parents will be there and i said i would try to join them.

This may be a case to use miles and/or a zone certificate for a ticket.

what is a zone certificate? and can you split miles? delta says it has space on outbound but not return with miles.

NW has zone certificates. They appear on coupon connection quite often.

i feel your pain. my parents used to make my sister and i meet them in sbh during x-mas and the airlines were never too cooperative (especially coming from norcal; i could have gone to australia for the same $). like someone else suggested, this would be a good time to use miles. i just checked aa.com and -much to my surprise- there was lots of availability on your dates for 30,000 miles. personally, i'd be tempted to use the miles in place of the $400 ticket; with the $800 ticket, it's a no-brainer.

usair has it for 30,000 miles, delta had no return seats, i'm not sure if i have enough on aa to get it......but then i have that 'should i be using those miles to go to europe?' anxiety. i think you're right though. i'd much prefer to spend money to go to europe (which is usually loads lower than $800)...should i grab the miles ticket then?

I would grab the miles ticket and use the cash to fly to Europe. The benefit of this strategy is that US-Europe tickets generally get you more miles for status and collecting at the same price as a ticket to St. Barts/Maarten.
