Airlines Move to Improve Customer Service

Six airlines at Indianapolis International Airport will be relocating ticket counters and/or gates as part of an overall plan to improve customer service. The following changes will begin to be implemented on September 29, 2004 and will be completed by October 31, 2004.

United Airlines will move all of its operations to Concourse D including the ticket counter and boarding gates. United will use Gates D7, D9 and D10.

ATA Airlines will relocate its ticket counter to the central ticketing area formerly occupied by United Airlines.

Southwest Airlines will relocate its ticket counter to the former ATA ticket counter location.

Northwest Airlines will double the size of its ticket counter at its present location.

America West Airlines’ boarding gate will move to Concourse C and its ticket counter will move to a more central location in the main ticket hall.

Midwest Connect will relocate its boarding gate to Concourse C.
Patrick Dooley, airport director, explained, "When the Airport Authority Board set the completion date for the new terminal, we developed a plan to maintain customer service levels in the existing airport. We not only looked at the condition of the physical plant, but also considered the flow of passengers through the building, the utilization of gates, and traffic patterns on the terminal roadways." He specifically noted some of the benefits of the airlines' moves in the terminal.
The United Airlines move to Concourse D helps balance passenger volume among the airport's four concourses and security checkpoints. With United Airlines joining US Airways on Concourse D, the total passenger share will increase to from 11.2% to 21.8%.

ATA Airlines move to the central ticketing area will eliminate the need for the ATA passengers to walk the entire length of the congested ticket counter lobby to the ATA boarding gates in Concourse C. In the new location, the passengers will walk just around the corner past the food court to the Concourse C security checkpoint. The curbside check-in for ATA will also be in the in the center of the terminal which will alleviate some of the traffic congestion on the Upper Level Terminal Drive passenger drop-off area.

The relocation of Southwest Airlines to the north end of the main ticket counter (the former ATA space) will put the counter at entrance to Concourse A where the Southwest boarding gates are located. This also means that Southwest passengers will no longer walk the length of the ticket lobby, but rather will just walk around the corner to the Concourse A security checkpoint.

Northwest Airlines will have expanded ticket counter space to accommodate the significant expansion in flights that were recently enacted. The America West and Midwest Connect ticket counter moves make room for the Northwest expansion and the boarding gate move to Concourse C provides another gate for Northwest on Concourse A.

Special signage is being posted throughout the terminal complex advising passengers of the changes. Notices are also on the airport web site at www.indianapolisairport.com.
