Routing Advice

Hi,

I am visiting the U.S.A with my nephew in Oct 2004. This is his first trip to U.S.A (I have lived in U.S.A for numerous years, and am currently in Asia)

We are flying into LAX. Then we would like to visit:

LAX
LAS
Detroit
then fly into either New York, Boston, Philadelphia
finally fly back to LAX to get our returning flight

The first question is, whether it is cheaper for two adults to fly LAX-LAS or to drive from LAX airport to LAS (one way rental, driver has a US Drivers License, is above 25)?. What is the approximate driving time, and good deal for a one way rental?

Second, what is the best way to schedule our next legs. We can either do:

1) LAX-LAS(drive or air, whichever is cheaper)-DTW-LGA/JFK/PHL/BOS
2) LAS-LAX-DTW-LGA/JFK/PHL/BOS
3) LAX-LAS-LGA/JFK/PHL/BOS (Do DTW independently from the east coast)

Any suggestions on the best way to route this trip so that we can minimize our travel costs. The travel is scheduled for the first week of October, 04.

Thank You
RJ
