Buenos Aires Basics

If we cash travelers checks should we get US$ or Pesos?

Should we cash travelers checks at a bank, airport, or is there an AMEX office in BsAs?

Where can we safely jog 5 miles a day in BsAs? We'll be staying at the Hilton.

What's the main limo service that operates out of EZE?

I'm told there are gentlemen who drive big luxury cars used as taxis and these guys approach arriving visitors, are they safe to use? Is it a good idea to hire one full time for 2 or 3 days?

Thanks

I would recommend visiting the South America forum on this board. You will get lots of answers there too.

I have stayed at the Hilton dozens and dozens of times in Buenos Aires and the area there is very, very safe.

1. I recommend using your ATM card to get cash out of the ATM machines. It's more reliable than carrying traveller's check even though you should have some for back-up safety. US dollar traveller's checks are ok at all the foreign exchange/banks and the conversion rates down there are good enough that I would not worry about it as long as you converted at a reputable location.

Cashing traveller's checks at the airport location is not recommended. Worst exchange rates and highest fees to be found in Buenos Aires.

You can jog around the Hilton very safely along the docks and/or in the park behind it. I prefer jogging along the docks.

I recommend using only registered taxis or radio taxis that you page. If you are looking for a daily car hire with driver, then that could be useful, although in Buenos Aires, presuming you speak Spanish, I prefer renting a cell phone and calling a radio taxi or phoning the hotel to request a far more expensive car to pick you up.

Hilton overcharges for car hires with drivers... just warning you.

GUWonder is dead-on, but I would add that the hotel concierge may also have maps of jogging routes if you want something more concrete--this was the case at the nearby Starwood.

The concierge at the Hilton has a jogging trail. There is also a pocket map and info on jogging in the desk drawers or on the desk table itself in the Hilton hotel rooms.
