Airline Responsibilities
Do the airlines have any resposibility anymore for missed flights etc? When flying back from LGA, missed our flight home and had to overnight in MIA - no
help from American Airlines, no one at the gate to tell us if our next flight had left, and NO APOLOGY! Even though it was a weather problem initially, if we had boarded in LGA on time we probably would still have made our flight and since this is a last flight, they do sometimes hold the plane for late arriving passengers. Is there any reason for me to complain to AA? And do they even give you a toothbrush anymore (as you can never find anyone who knows anything about your luggage, so it is best to just leave it and see where it lands)?

Unfortunately, for weather-related delays, you are on your own. You can try to solicit some assistance from the airline, but it's definitely an uphill battle. Mechanical delays, on the other hand, entitle you to compensation.
I understand your frustration. Due to bad weather in FLL on Monday morning, my wife was destined to misconnect with her ongoing ORD-SAT flight, and WN was unable to reaccommodate her on any flight combination between FLL and SAT until the next day. Frustrating, yes. Compensable? No.
