Help for JFK please ...

I am flying into JFK but I need to fly out of either LGA or HPN.

Basically need to know the best way to either / cheapest route and how long it would take / best option - cab / train etc. Will have large suitcase to take with me. About 12 noon on a Friday mid-July.

Thanks for your help

If you are looking to connect to a domestic airport from JFK, your best bet will, by far, be LGA. HPN is located outside the city limits in Westchester County. Depending on traffic, this would be at least a 40 minute drive from JFK. Provided you could even get a taxi to take you there, it would be expensive. A car service would be expensive too, definately more expensive than going to JFK. At Noon on a Friday in July, you could hit traffic, but LGA is pretty close to JFK (within 10 miles). If you budget an hour for travel time between the two, you will, in all likelihood, arrive at LGA early.

Have you verified that there is no way to get from JFK to your final destination? JFK does offer a sizeable number of domestic flights. Even if it required a connection, it might be easier than transferring to LGA. With the new AirTrain at JFK, getting between terminals is now pretty easy.

Well thanks for quick response !

Am flying to ORD so really only option is LGA - can go JFK via various places, but this time (and probably the only time ! ) I want the time and not the miles (sigh, you don't know how hard it is to say that )

the 2.19 hours from LGA-ORD direct or
the 4.20 hours from LGA-RDU-ORD

is much quicker than the 5+ hours from JFK
there is one JFK-DCA-ORD at 3.41 hours but is mid afternoon and was looking for one about 1.30 ish (I arrive JFK 1030)

Fair enough, ORD is definately a destination that is not well served from JFK. LGA is your best bet. Both American and United offer what amounts to an hourly service to ORD on weekdays.

You have to drive through connecticut (though only for ten seconds) to get to HPN.

You didn't say which Friday, it it's the 2nd, then there may be a lot of traffic at the airports. It's bad on any summer Friday afternoon, but on the 2nd it will be worse.

Quickest way, grab a cab if they are available.

Over at www.panynj.gov they offer some other transportation options, but a cab is by far the easiest way.

Between JFK and LGA, New York Airport Service Express Bus operates a coach every 30 minutes for $11; it takes from 30 to 45 minutes and stops at the LIRR station at Jamaica. To save a buck, you could take AirTrain to Jamaica ($5) and then the bus from there ($5) and it might be shorter.

A cab would cost $19 to $22 plus tip and take less than 30 minutes.

Good luck!

Have you considered Newark? There are plenty of flights from Newark to Chicago and they might be cheaper than LGA or HPN. Just a thought....

Here is the "Port Authority of NY/NJ" official web site about travel from JFK to either LGA or EWR.

Thanks for all your help -- oh and thanks for link - I did find that last year but couldn't find it again.

Only reason I picked LGA is when i looked on flying-fish it was slightly nearer, and as I was thinking of getting a cab, assumed it would be cheaper but with the Airport Express connection, may be a good option.

Newark is a hike from JFK. It may not be worth the stress when LGA is so much closer to JFK.

You could take NW via DTW to ORD or MDW from JFK in less than four hours.

Don't change airports unless absolutely necessary.

As long as its before 4pm, just get a cab around $22 inc Tip [GBP12]

I have done it faster from AA at JFK to AA at LGA, i.e.[ 25 minutes] than from Terminal 4 to Terminal 3 at Heathrow.

Thanks for all the advice - going either for the cab or the Port Authority - depends how I feel at the time !

Landing about 1055 on Friday lunchtime so hope to clear immigration / baggage etc by 12.30 ??? what are the lines like at JFK or is it just luck - can get thru ord from deplaning to outside awaiting collection in 20 mins !

Prefer to stick to AA or if necessary UA for the miles !

Would say going ANYWHERE is quicker than getting from T3-T4 at LHR !!

Smile Help for JFK!

Hi - just a commentary and insight on getting to/from JFK and mid-town! Was there last fall and took a shuttle from NY Hilton to JFK via Grand Central Station where one is transferred to a bus for LaGuardia, Newark or JFK. The trip was 2 1/2 hours! BUT, I left the Hilton at approximately 4 pm so there was rush hour traffic all the way! Just wanted to warn a fellow FlyerTalk buddy! Good luck! Is this your first time to New York!

I was just in Chicago a few weeks ago and had no problems getting to/form ORD. Was impressed how clean the city was too!
