Prepay bad Room?

There are some good prepay hotel rates for many chains. I fear that if I prepay and get to the hotel they can give me any room they want and I'm stuck with it since I'm within their cancellation period once I arrive.
Have you found that hotels put you in a worse room if you prepay and have no few options ? Or do you get a worse room simply because you got a good rate?

It varies, of course.

In Hiltons (in Europe), I have had this (unrenovated rooms near lifts). But in Le Mridien, I get good rooms - have even got free upgrades on bargain Priceline rooms on occasion.

In some cases with Priceline and other 3rd party booking agencies, this seems to occur. I would think that a hotel would be motivated to reward you in some way for choosing to book it through its web site, rather than the reverse. After all, you are shouldering a significant risk by choosing a prepay option. I guess you could always phone and ask, or email the hotel. Since you are doing this through the hotel web site, you have a right to know exactly what you are purchasing.
