For US Citizens -- birth certificate with a license for the picture or Passport.
Note that my sister was able to use her recently expired passport (she didn't check the date early enough to get the renewal) without any problems in January.

keep in mind that currently, it is US Immigration that may hassle you if you don't have a passport...

If you're flying, bring a passport.
Maybe you won't need one. But last week I was standing next to a very perplexed fellow who was denied boarding on a UA flight from BOS to YVR (via ORD) because he did not have a passport.
