WHBM is right, they are a promisary note from the bank that issues them, rather than legal tender. But for example since the RBS is now one of the biggest banks in the world, most people believe their promisary notes.

As a Scot living in England, I find major stores, supermarkets completely ok (if in doubt insist they call a supervisor). Small stores usually accept when I stand and frown at them when they start to look doubtful. However, I do know of one small town which got hit with a load of Scottish forgeries, and now most shops won't accept any Scottish money - they see it so little they cannot detect forgeries.

Anyway, any sensible person knows that Scottish money is worth more than English notes - ours is backed by oil
