upgrading an award ticket
I've got a specific post in the USAir forum. Just wanted to open this up to everyone to see if you have any suggestions.

Generally is impossible to upgrade an award ticket. The only "upgrade" I can think of would be an operational upgrade by the gate agents in case the cabin were oversold. But it's hard to plan on those.

Actually, for US, the premium awards ARE upgradeable at time of booking. You can upgrade either based on status (Domestic/Caribbean) or with upgrade coupons (TransAtlantic).

I believe the same applies for KL. Award tickets can be upgraded with miles, on day of departure, in the lounge. This is according to reports in the KL forum. Given KLM's standard consitency, this is probably neither a published benefit, nor something to rely on.
