I am planning a trip to europe (likely Germany) and intend to be there for about 2 weeks. I am a USAir Div Miles member with 40,000 miles currently. I would like to fly first class (obviously) and know I can likely purchase RT on most airlines for approximately $300+/- ATl-FRA. I am willing to choose just about any German or Swiss or Austrian destination.

I am going with a friend and am trying to figure a way we can both fly First Class RT for a reasonable price. I do not care which airline I fly, however, if I were to pay coach airfare, I would prefer Lufthansa over any others.

I need advice on the best ways to try and accomodate my desire to fly in an upgraded status from coach. Do I buy 2 coach airfares on USAir and use my FF miles to upgrade myself and then find a kind soul with a coupon for my travel partner? Do I try to find 2 upgrade coupons on Lufthansa and pay coach airfare and take the double Dividend Miles for a future trip?

Please help...

I am flexible with the destination, the departure and return dates as long as they are January 2004

AFAIK, you can only use your US miles to upgrade US flights, and only to business class (not that US offers trans-Atlantic FC anymore). You need 60,000 miles to upgrade from an eligible fare on a r/t basis, or 30,000 each way. So only one of you can upgrade in one direction only. Most US international upgrade coupons arenot transferable and may require status to use. Not sure if any LH ones exist. You may want to try posting in the US and LH forums.
