First Travel Upgrades
Has anyone been upgraded to first class by simply asking? Any tricks that I should know about if first class is empty. I'm traveling to San Juan on Sunday and would appreciate any recommendations.

You don't ever see empty "F" cabins anymore...
Don't expect to get upgraded ahead of your airline's elites -- and usually these days there are more qualifying elites than available seats.
But if there are available seats, first dibs normally go to A) well-dressed polite people and B) people who paid full Y prices, or both. They are usually the recipients of operational upugrades.

I once got upgraded to F because the flight had more seats in F than there were passengers on the flight. EVERYONE got upgraded! ... but the flight was only from SLC to DEN, so all the upgrade meant was a slightly more comfortable seat and being served orange juice in a glass instead of in a plastic cup.
