An LAX terminal and TPA come to mind. But the reason that both of these do it that way is because there are escelators and a shuttle, respectively, inbetween the initial entrance to the 'secure' area and the actual checkpoint. So they don't want you to go up the stairs/ride the shuttle and realize you haven't checked in.</font>
But why would they need to look *twice* to see if you have a boarding pass? It would be pretty hard to check in, get a boarding pass, complete the first boarding pass inspection, and then un-check-in on your way to the second boarding pass inspection.

I used to have an unconfirmed ticket (destination in there, but no confirmed flight, and fully refundable) which I'd use several times to get me airside in LHR, to help an elderly relative. They're also very handy for getting round 'ticket-out' border control restrictions.</font>

The question reminds of what happens to George in a Seinfeld episode.

Please make sure that the tickets are not Supersavers!

I did this unintentionally once, had a fully refundable ticket, checked-in, and then was called and told at the gate 'Don't come, Hurricane Isabel is coming'. So I walked to special services, had them cancel the reservation and I walked out.

Don't see why it wouldn't work!

stimpy, UA will give you a gate pass I believe. Call them or whatever airline. You're not the first to go through this situation, and buying a full Y seems a bit overkill just to meet the lady at the gate. Of course it will probably impress her that you went through such hoops

I once had a recruiter on a potential job leave me a message that he wanted me to meet him for an interview in a particular airline's lounge (behind security) while he was briefly passing through my city of residence. He didn't think about the fact that I might have trouble getting to the interview a/ I didn't have status with that airline and b/ I wasn't flying that day!!

I bought a first class ticket, attended the interview (sharing a chuckle together when I mentioned the hoops I had gone through so we could meet), then cancelled the reservation and got a full refund. While I didn't get the job, the recruiter later told me that he used the story on subsequent occasions as an example of creative problem solving.
