Hong Kong
Leaving for Hong Kong in a few days, for a few days. Would appreciate in info on places to eat, see and shop. We're there for only 3 days, and I don't want to miss any of the "must see" things.
Thanks
Thanks

Just back from 2 days/3 nights in HKG. Some tips:
1) take the tram to Victoria Peak. Very cool views. Even if it's cloudy out, the weather changes all the time.
2) you might read about taking the old "tram" through Hong Kong. I found a better option which follows the same route. The city's "23 Bus" which is airconditioned. We hopped on at the botanical garden by accident - trying to get back to town - and just kept riding it to North Pier (north side of the city). It followed the tram route exactly and cost 80 cents (US). Plus the bus is air conditioned and uncrowded, the tram no AC and packed with people
3) At the airport, you will either receive this from the hostesses after customs or ask for it at the tourist info desk, a "welcome hong kong" booklet containing a coupon for buy one, get one free ticket for the train into town. This airport train is the best I've ever seen (well Narita Express is great too but soooo expensive). You can take this coupon and your credit card to the Transportation Assistance desk to get your tickets. The train is then about 100 steps away.
(4) While at the Transportation desk, get a "Octopus" card as well. It requires a refundable deposit (like $2 US) and comes with money pre-programmed on it. At any train, bus, or ferry station -- even the Victoria Peak tram, you just hold your card up and it subtracts the amount due. (We need this in D.C.!) The basic HK$150 card ($20 US) will totally cover you for two days. Also, on the way back to the airport, at Central & Kowloon stations, there is a package deal for 2+ people traveling on the same train to the airport. Just ask for it. Will save you a couple of bucks.
5) There isn't a lot of "old" architecture in HKG. The Brits didn't want to preserve a lot lest the Chinese govt think they were promoting/saving colonialism ... so if you are looking for a historical architecture tour, forget it. However, some of the new building like the HSCB & Bank of China are "rock stars" in modern architecture.
6) Star Ferry offers a one hour harbour cruise about 4 times a day. Take that.
7) Favorite new store: Shanghai Tang. Women's clothes, men's clothes - western sizes! - and funky home accessories. Three stores in HKG, including the Pen & airport. Also, look at "Born To Shop: Hong Kong, Beijing & Shanghai" by Suzy Gershman for ideas.
8) Mega-line for Tea at the Pen. Skip that.
9) Best dinner w/view. 'Felix' at the Pen. Food was great, reasonably priced ($100 for two inc. 4 gin & tonics at $10/each) and fantastic views. Went on a Monday night at 6, got to see the sun set & lights come on in HKG. Had concierge make res. same day. Almost all tables are great - we sat in the middle of the room and could see the Harbour & Kowloon all at once.
10) Are you staying in Kowloon? (ick, except for a few hotels - Hong Kong Island is much nicer) You can look at the view of HKG from Felix!
