This post should really be in Miles Buzz (as I'm sure it will be soon). Yes, it's possible--I just transferred AAdvantage points into HHonors certificates that I deposited into my HHonors account. You have to read a lot of fine print in all the hotel FF program books to figure out how to do this, and the selection of airlines is not too broad, but it can be done on a selective basis.
