I come from India so flying for the common man is more or less out of the question, unless it is on company dime

My first flight for the domestic Indian airlines in March 1995 between Bombay and Bangalore for my second job. Yes in those days they actually flew me up for the final interview.

I was such a novice, I lugged my check in baggage without knowing I should have first had them scanned at the entrace. I did not even know enough to use the free baggage carts(they are still free in India I believe)

After that flew 3 or 4 times on business in JetAirways (737s) and then twice on own money. At that time a domestic flight between Madras and Bombay was nearly 70% of my monthly take home pay. and then on the cheaper AirIndia domestic flights 2-3 times . Those flights were a hop schedule. For example a Bombay-Singapore flight may go - Bombay =>Madras->Singapore. The flight may reach Madras at an ungodly 4 a.m. but it may be 25% cheaper.

After that I moved to the US and began work as a contractor in IBM in the Research Triangle. This current job took me to China , twice to Singapore, Australia and almost exclusively on NorthWest. I managed to reach NW Silver thanks to these trips.

I am really small fry compared to the EXP and PLTs in this forum.

But in the last one year since I read about flyertalk in a washingtonpost article , I have checked out this website at least once.

Two specific instances when Flyertalk helped me personally

KeithGuy gave me a very good tip on hotels in London which I used to great benefit back in March this year

Keithguy again - for a great transc RDU-SFO that came in just a tad over $200 back in February. I got upgraded to first on all 4 segments on that trip.

My first flights were in-utero - some airport in the US to Jamaica. I guess I should ask my mother what airport they left from.

Ah yes; I must try a helicopter tour soon. From what I've been told, if I call the Air Support Division watch commander, I can schedule a ride.

Otherwise, I could probably go on one of those New York City helicopter rides.

My folks tell me I first flew when I was less than a year old, but I don�t have memories of that. The first time I remember flying was when I was 8 years old. I flew ATL-RIC one-way to see my aunt and uncle. The flight was on the now defunct Eastern Airlines. Although it was the mid-80s, my parents still made me wear a tie. I recall everything being so small down below, and the way my ears hurt for a while after the plane took off. It was so much fun to be high up in the sky like a bird.

I was about 4 years old and my parents had taken the train from Chicago to Mexico City. Apparently they hadn't heard about not drinking the water. We had to fly back on AA.

My next flight was at age 8. It was a charter called Air Holiday. They had a DC-6. We went from Milwaukee to Acapluco. About 2 months later, Milwaukee to Las Vegas.

My first jet flight was also with Air Holiday, Milwaukee to HNL with a stop in Vegas. That was a 707. We blew an engine on take off out of HNL at 800 feet.

First flight: Seaplane flight around San Pedro, LA harbor in 1976.

First jet flight: San Jose CA to LAX on PSA in 1980 when I was 15...the smiling plane!

It was an MD80 or DC9...can't remember.
