Help with canceled flight

I was wondering if anybody could help me. I had 3 paid tickets, that I purchased through Delta in 2/03, from Boston to Orlando for a Disney cruise. While looking at their site last week I couldnt find my departure flight. After calling Delta, I was told it was canceled shortly after I booked it. They had re-booked it on another flight about 9 hours later which would make us miss our ship. In order to avoid paying an additional $400 per ticket, my only choice was to book Southwest out of Providence for an added $50 per ticket. Originally, Delta didnt want to refund my money due to the fact I had "non refund/change/penalty" tickets. I'm wondering if Delta is liable for my added expenses that I know have. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Don't expect Delta to do anything for you at this point. Did you ask if they had any earlier flights that would get you to your destination ahead of your original arrival time? They should have done that for you.

Delta should be willing to change your flight to an earlier one or refund the ticket.

Thanks for the reply...first, Delta never even bothered to tell me they cancelled my flight (6 months have past) and they have offered a refund after an argument. They also offered an earlier flight that would have me flying across half the country making 2 connections which is not an option with 2 kids under 10.

You can see DL's contract of carriage here:
http://www.delta.com/pdfs/contract_of_carriage_dom.pdf

See rule 240 (flight cancellations) and rule 260 (involuntary refunds).

That's good that Delta came to their senses and offered a refund. I assume you took that, since you already bought the other ticket on Southwest?

Making two connections with kids isn't that bad. I do double and triple connections or worse with my kids, and it's a blast! My wife hates it, but my three kids and I easily out-vote her.

Have a good trip!
