Extra gate screening at MUC

Gates B29 and B30 at MUC (Munich) are now extra security gates.

You have to pass through an additional metal detector and another bag x-ray. You then go into a secure area.

Talk about a waste of time! It is exactly the same as the screening process that you undertake to enter the departures area. All it served to do was to delay our flight by 30 minutes.

I understand about the need for enhanced security, but this was for show. Nothing more and nothing less.

Not that I disagree, BUT (as I've only been through MUC on 1 trip I don't recall) - is the terminal otherwise just one large "secured" area where people are otherwise connecting flights from wherever, without having to otherwise go through MUC security, but just security at their initial point of departure? If so, its not all show. If not, its the same crap that is appearing in more and more places, like BRU where my carry on was picked apart piece by piece on the way to the gates (in the extra security US departures area)

You might want to direct your comments to Tony Blair. You might want to see if other flights were delayed that day.
Welcome to the Club. Flights to the USA and Canada have had second security points at a
number of airports within the last year.

Yes, it appears MUC has copied FRA, AMS, and IST (those are the ones that come to mind off the top of my head). Consider yourself lucky up until now - you've been flying out of MUC on borrowed time. Oh well... at least I can rest assured the TSA isn't the only airport security authority with too much time on its hands.

The last couple of times I went to Italy their airports didn't have this extra gate security, only the USA-imposed random inspections, which was ironic to me because Italy is otherwise one of the most metal-detector-happy countries in Europe. Of course, I haven't been to Italy in over a year so perhaps things have changed...
