Help getting to FLR for cheap

So we're planning a trip to Florence between June 14th & June 23rd (travel any time between these dates).

Searching Orbitz, Hotwire, and Lufthansa (the best price listed on orbitz), we can get NYC->FLR for about $700. Is this about average? Do you think we could find it cheaper?

As 2 students both on tight budgets, would it be cheaper to fly into another airport & take the train? Our lodging is totally free, so our primary expense will be the flights/transportation there.

Any help/insight would be appreciated. I read through the threads on FLR, but would appreciate any additional information.

As far as mileage accumulation for the trip, I'd love to be able to take US into Rome and connect from there...but I'm primarily thinking about $, not miles.

Thanks as always,
Chris

As you suggested, you could try to fly into FCO or MXP, and take the train to Florence from there, as I believe both have connecting service to the main train stations (either by bus or train.)
If you don't have a eurail pass or something like that, you can get an idea what your ticket would cost using www.trenitalia.it

Good luck!

P.S. Just checked Expedia, and Delta has fares ~$620 from NYC for both alternate airports (FCO and MXP) for those dates you mentioned.
