For a US passport it is better to go to your local court house and have it sent from there. The expide fee and FED-EX/UPSS overnight enevelopes should be included to send in the paperwork and for the return passport to be returned. If you are leaving within 24 hours, the only way to get a passport is to show up in person at one of the US passport offices.
If you are looking to get a visa, then the best way is with any of the companies that will hand carry/pick up your passport for a fee.

If you are near one of the passport offices in the counrty (list over at http://travel.state.gov/agencies_list.html) that is probably the easiest way, call, make the appointment, show up with everything you need, and get it the next day.
I live a mile from one and work two miles from another, so I have never used one of the services, sorry.

I've expedited through the US Passport office several times for various family members.
As I recall, you need a letter showing why you need to leave so quickly, a prepaid courier (e.g. FedEx) airbill and envelope, in addition to the expedite fee, pix, certified copy of birth cert, and application. I believe we photocopied our outgoing airline itinerary and provided that as well.
It took only a day or two in each case.

I've used these people
http://www.abriggs.com/
twice. Once for a visa and once for a passport. The got it done when they
said they would, and nothing got lost. I can't say the same for the US passport office.
