From DCA to Friendship Heights, take the Yellow line to Gallery Place/Chinatown (Direction: Mt. Vernon) and once there, switch to the Red (Direction: Shady Grove) and you should be in Friendship Heights soon enough.
The downside to cabs: traffic. DC-area traffic is horrible, and the 14th street bridge is especially bad. Wisconsin Ave. won't be fun most times, either. Also, just so you're prepared, DC cabs have no meters, (zones) and come in an array of colors.
As a former DC-area resident, I'd have to say you'll be fine taking the Metro for most transportation, but I'd also suggest taking a cab back to the hotel at night.
Have fun in DC.

As a current DC resident, I'd change the cab-at-night suggestion. Off-hours Metro ridership has really increased in the last few years and they've increased train frequencies along with it. This past Monday night at 9:30 the Red Line was running every ten minutes.

Just note than Monday to Thursday night, the last train cut-off can be as early as 11:20 p.m. or 40 minutes earlier than you expect if you presume a midnight on weekdays, and 2 a.m. on weekends (not sunday night) cut-off. Just a note of caution.</font>

"When traveling late at night, be sure to check the scheduled departure time for the last train. At many stations, the last train departs before midnight (2 a.m. on Friday and Saturdays) so it is important that you allow enough time to enter the system and board the train. Last train departure times are posted at each station kiosk. "
