WHAT DO THE AIRLINES KNOW ABOUT US?
Not to appear totally ignorant, but what, exactly, do the airlines know about the passengers? When I check in, does the ticket agent/gate agent have a profile on me of sorts, or just info on the current itinerary? I have often wondered...anybody know?

it's called a PNR, and if you want to see if they store "things" in it, blow a complete spazz at a check-in agent and see what happens the next time you need to use the airline!
p.s. SPAZZ, not "do something illegal"... that will get you a record of a different kind.

They know when you are good!
They know when you are bad!
They know when you are naughty or nice!
Why do you think, that they try to get everyone to sign up for FreqFlyer miles, when they have so few seats to reward the small percentage of Flyers who accumulate sufficient miles for a coach ticket!

I haven't worked at the airport since September 11, but I doubt much has changed. The PNR rarely contained anything good: your name, number, where you're headed, which flights, if you ordered a special meal.
The security "flag" was just that. No details as to why you deserve extra scrutiny.
There were occasional lengthy remarks, especially if something bad happened to you (i.e. the airline screwed up.)
There are some fun "SSRs" (Special Service Requests), such as "Prisoner in Custody" and "First Time Flyer." I often threatened to enter these requests in my coworker's travel plans.
The frequent flyer data is stored separately. But it's just like your statement: where you've flown, if you have elite status, etc.
If a passenger was a "problem passenger," a special computer code wasn't necessary--you could just tell by the way they approached the counter. Since I'm male, they always assumed I was in charge and came to me first.

i think [but don't know] that your passport # is given to us immigration when you leave. i had a strange experience @ ord last sunday....a lot of computer pecking by the immigration person, double stamping my customs card, & then being told to go thru the red line @ customs...i was on a mr w/2 nites in london. anyway, the customs person scratched his head, wondering what to do...i explained mr told him that i lied , sort of because i had 2 amenity kits from the a/l & some cocoa packets from the hotel that i didn't estimate the cost of when i declared that i spent 0 on stuff. he did a cursory look thru my carry on & gave me the ok to go.
