I'll be moving this thread over to TravelBuzz, because the question deals with a subject other than miles and points.

Qantas and BA - no piece may weigh more than 32 kg (70 lbs). No ifs or buts (though this is new for BA, as from 1 January 2003). Last night I saw a family repacking their bags in front of an increasingly-entertained public at ORD because some of their bags were way over that.

It makes a difference where you are comming from, and where you are going to.
North american flights usually read line the AA website as I think there is airline discression,
Transatlantic reads line the LH site, where there is some treaty in effect, and 2 x 32kg is the rule, although an extra may be allowed.
Inter European is again airline discressionary.
It is cost effective to carry extra bags rather than overweight or oversized bags.

Where are you going to/from? I found Air France internation as well as Aer Lingus to be quite understand especially if you have a good excuse as to why you're travelling so heavy (ie moving, sport equip).
Cheers!
