Paper Tickets
I heard another traveller tell the gate agent that he wanted paper tickets and only paper tickets. What am I missing? Is there some secret to getting paper tickets that I don't know about?

Probably the same people who keep their money under the mattress. Hangover from the Depression, I guess.
Other than that, the only reason I can think of for having paper tix is that it might be easier to get assigned over to another carrier in case of flight delays/cancellations, etc. Or if it goes bankrupt on you right in the middle of your trip.

I am comfortable now with E-tkts. However, when I surrender paper certs for confirmed upgrades, I always insist on a receipt documenting that the certs have been taken. I don't need the aggravation of being asked for an upgrade certificate when checking in for my 12-hour flight home because the agent that took it forgot to enter the transaction in my record.

why and when I prefer paper tickets:
* when I fly (same day) different segments with different airlines (example: swiss to Germany, LH to USA, UA for inner North America) I can easily check my luggage through to the final destination when presenting my tickets - I can't when just presenting e-ticket-confirmations (and LH with Amadeus and UA don't even work with/on the same reservation systems ...).
* some countries (example Egypt in Caire) don't let me into the international airport without a real paper ticket in hand
* on transatlantic tickets to the USA the departing airline (and sometimes US immigration too) wants to see my return ticket.
* airline (check-in) computer systems, from time to time, can be down
* when I buy, with my credit card, tickets for third parties (and I won't be present, and I can't show the airline my credit card, at check-in)
* when upgrades are confirmed, I can let the agents put a confirmation sticker on my paper-ticket
* paper-tickets are much easier to change over to another carrier

That's a great idea about asking for a receipt when a paper ticket or certificate has been submitted!
Well, this individual could have had a negative experience with e-tickets. My friend was asked to show the credit card she paid for the e ticket with and when she did not have it on hand they sent her away!
Cheers to you all!
