Driving or Metro into D.C.from BWI

Where is the best place to park a vehicle and then take the Metro in D.C.after arriving at BWI? Am I correct in thinking that there is no fee for parking in the Park & Rides for 24 hours?

Thanks

Not at the ones I am familiar with. The New Carollton stop, or the Greenbelt stop are easiest. Not only does New carollton cost, It sells out. If you do 24 hrs in the NC park& ride, you may get ticketed.

Looks like Greenbelt allows 24 hr, but is not free.

You can take the MARC from BWI to Union Station. A shuttle bus will take you from the terminal to the train stop.

I'm not sure I understand your question.

You are arriving by plane into BWI. Are you then renting a car in BWI, and driving as far as possible to DC, parking the car somewhere, so you can take mass transit into DC? You only want to be in DC for a short while and need the car to proceed to other destinations? It's your own car, you're not renting. You don't have a car, you don't need a car, you are staying in DC for a few days? Why not just use mass transit for the whole trip?

Please clarify. It would help with the answers. I'm not being cheeky, I just don't understand.

Why not take the free bus from BWI to the nearby BWI Amtrak station and train it to DC? Do Metro from there. Later rent your car in DC if needed.

Remember that the MARC doesn't run on weekends. Also remember the new bus from BWI terminal to Greenbelt Metro. These are the best ways to get to DC from BWI. If you're coming into BWI from out of town, don't bother with a car until later. You'll just have to park it, and won't need it for DC as you've apparently already figured out. If there's another reason you need to park a car (such as someone locally is picking you up, or you're meeting someone who is driving), then the best place to park is the BWI Rail Station. From there, you can get right on the MARC train. Or you can go back to the terminal and get that bus to Greenbelt Metro. MARC info at http://www.mtamaryland.com/ Metro info (including the bus, which is run by them) at http://www.wmata.com/ The garage at BWI Rail Station beats the satellite parking in price and usually in convenience, too (plus it's covered!)

Sorry I wasn't clear. My daughter is borrowing a car from a friend to pick someone up at BWI on a Saturday. From there they will spend a Saturday and Sunday in D.C. I encouraged them to use the Metro. I now understand that there is no parking fee on weekends at Metro stations.
So, the questions is, which is the best Metro station to go to from BWI?

thanks.

Greenbelt is closest Metro stop from BWI.
Yes the parking is free on weekends and
federal holidays. I don't know if there
are overnight restrictions for weekends or
federal holdiays. Greenbelt is the green line there are plenty of maps inside the station and on the trains. Purchase a pass for $5 per weekend day and ride from 8am to
approx midnight, just keep in mind when the last train leaves. Leave no valuables in your car or in plain sight, lock the car.
Quick Directions (BW Parkway (Rte. 295) towards Washington and exit Greenbelt Rd. (Rte. 193) stay in the right hand lane and make a right turn before Kenilworth Ave, this turn puts you onto Kenilworth. Once on Kenilworth - move over to the left hand lane as soon as you can and stay in the left lane; three traffic lights make a left by the Fed. Court
House as a landmark there is a large Metro sign. Good Luck and I think it's three lightson Kenilworth they keep adding 'em.

Greenbelt. It is very easy to get to and very well patroled. It is the closest station you would reach coming from BWI. Just hop on 95 S to 495 (south or east...I forget what the sign says now). It's the second exit I believe and very well marked.

I have used it many times on weekends. Even if you are used to driving in DC, it is the most hassle-free way to go for sightseeing. There is stop right iiin the middle of the mall so you come out in front of the museums. Just need to be aware of hours. I forget how late the trains run on weekends. They can also buy a metro day pass (I believe) that would allow them unlimited use for the day.
