Legality of gum in SIN?

Strange question, I realise. But I'm connecting in SIN for the first time next month.

I like to chew gum on flights to help equalise pressure. I understand that chewing gum in SIN is strictly forbidden. But will I have any trouble just carrying gum for the rest of my flights?

I'd hate to go to prison for the illegal import/export of chewing gum. White collar crime is much more my bag.

Chewing of gum is *not* forbidden! It is the sale and distribution of gum that is. You won't be able to find them in the shops but nothing to stop you from consuming them. Just make sure you toss the gum in the bin or you'll be hauled in for littering ;-)

ps: have "transported" gum plenty in and out of SG. Like customs is really interested in gum...

On my first visit to SIN I expected to see police everywhere.

In 3 days I never saw a uniform.

(I did see military at the airport).

This is not United specific, so I'll be moving it to TravelBuzz.

Oh they are there. Just in plainclothes.

Yes, I'm certain of that. They are strolling Orchard Road and elsewhere.

But my encouragement to Matthew was that the "oppression" is subtle, relatively benign, and not at all apparent to visitors.
